with a Bilingual Creative Exploration of Memory and Loss

Saturday, January 22, 2011
6 pm
St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Hollywood
Free and Open to the Public

Josie Cáceres is a choreographer and performer in contemporary dance. She lives in Quito, Ecuador, where she is part of Corporación El Cuarto Piso, which provides workshops on dance and creative movement throughout the country. She was invited to present her work “La Shunguita” in the international Festival of Theater in Cádiz, Spain and has been artist-in-residence in the Festival of Panoramic Dance in Brazil. She received the Iberescena Prize for the research in dramatic dance for the work “Maravillosa II, 2011.”

A,E,I…….E,A
Images of Deterioration

What we remember depends on many parts of our brains working together. These parts can break apart or become unglued in one way or another. When this happens, memories can disappear, chewed up and devoured into obscurity. This work explores this moment, when the deposits of memory and language in the brain have been swept away.

The work is a collaborative project of Josie Cáceres (choreographer) and Víctor Hoyos, (Industrial Designer). The development of the exposition, its relationship with space, objects and light, weave together a network of communication between the artists, symbols and objects explored in the work.

This project is dedicated to the Rt. Rev. Adrián Cáceres, former Episcopal Bishop of Ecuador.

PARISH WORK DAY
THIS SUNDAY

Tomorrow, August 8th, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., will be our second work day of the summer. We will be harvesting and working in the garden, painting, cleaning, moving things and sprucing up the church. As before, we will also have food and music and a bilingual service. Come in work clothes and with a will to help out. See you then.

A CALL FOR VOLUNTEER HELP
WITH CHILDREN’S CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

We began a new season of the church year with Pentecost on Sunday, May 23rd. At that time, we started a new cycle of Godly Play exercises and Sunday School workshops.

Please consider volunteering to lead a class. The lessons are creative, flexible and very adaptive to your own strengths and comfort zones. Volunteers may preview the lessons well ahead of the Sunday on which you are volunteering, to ensure maximum familiarity with the theme of the session. Volunteers are welcome and needed for all three age groups: pre and kindergarten; elementary; and middle through high school.

If you have questions or convictions, please contact Cameron.

CAN YOU DONATE THE FOLLOWING TO THE CHURCH?

POWDERED CREAMER (FOR COFFEE)
SUGAR

The U2charist will follow the liturgical structure of an Episcopal Eucharist, but incorporate U2 classics like, “Pride” (In the Name of Love); “Sunday, Bloody Sunday”; “When Love Comes to Town” “One” and “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” among others.

The worship service is free and appropriate for all ages (subject to sonic volume sensitivity). All are welcome.

Author of Teen Music Novel to Speak at St. Stephen’s Hollywood

Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 3 pm
St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church
Hollywood, CA
Free and Open to the Public

Award-winning Reuters journalist Susan Zeidler will read, sign and discuss her debut novel, “The Practice Room” at St. Stephen’s Hollywood on Saturday, February 27 at 3:00 PM. Zeidler appears as a part of the parish’s ongoing Arts & Reconciliation series. Her visit will be of particular interest to teen readers.

“The Practice Room” tells the story of protagonist Zoey Browne, a young musician who discovers she has the ability to travel back in time through the power of music. Zoey embarks upon a magical journey into a musical world that transforms each time she returns, bringing her closer to uncovering secrets about her family and discovering things about herself she never believed were possible.

“The Practice Room” weaves history and music into a literary ride that takes the reader to settings as varied as Harlem in the 1930s, Woodstock in 1969, the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and a 2002 rock concert in Los Angeles.

Zoey’s journey not only tells the story of one teen’s coming of age and growth as a musician, but also shows how music transcends all boundaries.

Author Susan Zeidler grew up in Baldwin, Long Island, where she developed an early love for the arts. As a musician, Susan has performed around the world in cities as varied as Oslo, Manhattan, and Los Angeles.

Susan holds a B.A. from State University of New York at Albany and an M.S. from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.

Admission to the event is free. Free parking is offered in the church lot at Carlos and Gower. St. Stephen’s is located at 6125 Carlos Avenue, Hollywood, 90028.
